ABOUT FREESOUND

Freesound is a contemporary music collective in Toronto that supports new ideas in experimental and contemporary chamber music through innovative, daring, and compelling programming.

Built around a core of nine members that often incorporates electronics, video, and other technology, Freesound’s reputation for outstanding performances and inventive programming is at the forefront of contemporary music in Canada. Each season sees Freesound focusing on a small number of commissions, working closely with the composers to create personal works.

Freesound’s concerts combine commissions, repeat performances, and revivals of landmark works from the 21st and late 20th centuries. Freesound is dedicated to artistic innovation, exploring the creation of new works, non-traditional approaches to concert formats, accessibility, and more, all at the highest caliber of artistic expression.

Since its founding in 2018, Freesound has performed at festivals such as Suoni Il Poppolo Festival (Montreal) and Women from Space (Toronto). Since 2023, Freesound has been ensemble-in-residence at Arraymusic in Toronto.

Freesound, its commissions, and performances are generously funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Toronto Arts Council, the SOCAN Foundation, the Ontario Arts Council, Lorna & Roger Smith, and the contributions of its various private donors.
